I
t's 9 p.m. on a Thursday and I'm on
my way home from a long day in the
operating room. My cell phone rings.
It's my doctor informing me that the
results of my biopsy are once again
abnormal. I need to undergo surgery. A
million thoughts come to mind. It can't
be ... I'm not ready for this ... My kids
are too young ... I'm too young ... It's not
my time.
I also realize that if I have to
have an operation, I need to have it as
soon as possible. If it's cancer, it won't
wait.
The next morning, I have 25 patients
scheduled in clinic. I was suddenly
