Managing Risk Making be)er decisions in Surgical Workflows Getinge Surgical Workflows Volume 1 • Issue 1 • April 2018 Over the past decade, hospitals have faced intensified scrutiny by regulatory agencies, accreditation organizations, media outlets and an increasingly well-informed public who have a wealth of online data at their fingertips to guide their decisions about where to seek care. Search engine results for hospital performance data reveals an overwhelming selection of report cards for individual institutions coupled with national and regional comparative rankings. A number of these performance reviews are generated by familiar sites such as U.S. News & World Report, Consumer Reports and Medicare.gov. U.S. News & World Report evaluates data on nearly 5,000 hospitals in 16 adult specialties, nine adult procedures/conditions and ten pediatric specialties. U.S. News relies heavily on data that originates from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the American Hospital Association and other professional organizations. Consumer Reports distills data on more than 4,000 hospitals from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, state inpatient databases, and the American Hospital Association to create a Safety Score based on the following performance metrics: • Avoiding C-difficile infections • Avoiding MRSA infections • Avoiding C-sections Medicare.gov publishes Hospital Compare that evaluates the quality of care at more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals including 130 Veterans Administration medical centers across the United States. Hospital Compare summarizes up to 57 quality measures focused within the following categories: • Mortality • Safety of care • Re-admissions • Patient experience • Overall heart bypass surgery performance • Avoiding readmissions • Overall patient experience The numbers don't lie.
