• Straighten the arm. Because no
2 arm shapes are alike, use a
rolled-up blanket or pillow to
straighten the arm. This can help
with alignment if the arm is short
and wide. Let the hand hang off
the end of the blanket or pillow
and drop down. This also gets the
knuckles out of the way. Having to
hold the catheter over the knuckles can change the entry angle of
the needle if you're using hand
veins.
• Use the bedside table. If the
patient is heavyset and seems to
fill the space, use the bedside
table to straighten out the arm
and increase the area you have to
work with. Adjusting the table
will lift or lower the arm to a
more workable and comfortable
angle. These techniques will
make it easier to hold the hand
and skin, and avoid "crimping"
when you're threading the needle.
