IDEAS THAT WORK
1. opening a case,
2. passing instruments and
3. loading lenses.
Each tech-in-training is instructed on each
step, then assigned to spend at least 2 hours
(or possibly an entire day) on each one, practicing and performing just that step during a
slate of cases, under the supervision of an
experienced tech. They fine-tune the technique while asking and answering questions
on each step, before eventually handling all 3
(the whole process) on a case day.
It obviously takes more time than a showand-tell would, but the results have convinced
us that it's a good system and well worth the 6
hours or more. Immersing new techs into the
process actually fast-tracks their training,
making them more proficient more quickly,
and less likely to accidentally waste lenses or
time.
