In fact, double-gloving has been shown to reduce the risk of inner glove perforations by 71%, compared with single-gloving. 2 That's especially critical in the operating room, where surgical glove punctures and tears have been shown to present the greatest risk of blood contact for OR personnel. 1 It's no wonder double-gloving is considered a best practice and is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American College of Surgeons, and the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses, as well as many other prestigious healthcare organizations. But let's face it. Double-gloving can be a pain. And when best practices are a pain, people don't always adhere to them. Doctors and nurses complain that it takes too long to put on two pairs of gloves. And it's awkward, they say, trying to adjust the underglove in such a way that the gloves fit together perfectly and provide adequate tactility. Some also object to the excess waste created by having to open two pairs of gloves. Beyond that, even if OR personnel do double-glove, they might not be well protected from exposure to blood and other bodily fluid transmissions. If the gloves are the same color, a tear in the outside glove may go unnoticed until it's too late. Ansell has the answer: a system that makes double- gloving both easier and more effective. The GAMMEX® PI Glove-in-Glove System™ is the first-to- market, pre-donned double-gloving system that makes double-gloving faster and easier. The outer and inner gloves are pre-donned, so double- gloving is accomplished in just one don. The gloves are also aligned at the fingertips, so there's little or no need to adjust them once they're on. Additionally, the outer gloves come off easily, thanks to the smooth upper surface of the inner gloves, making it easy to accommodate intraoperative changes. The system also makes breach detection easier, because the outer glove is semitransparent, and the inner glove is green. That combination makes it easy for the OR team to see tears in the outer glove. That's crucial, because studies show that visual identification of breaches improves by as much as 86% 3 when inner gloves are a contrasting color. The system also addresses environmental concerns. The pre-donned gloves are packed in one poly-pouch and one inner-wrap, providing a 50% reduction in inner packaging materials. Another important consideration: Both gloves are non- latex. Thus, they eliminate the risk of Type I latex allergies and minimize Type IV allergies and sensitivities. With so much at stake, it's time to consider effective double-gloving a necessary best practice, not just an optional one. Ansell keeps healthcare workers' needs at the forefront of PPE design, breeding innovation and solutions that address their needs while keeping them safe. The GAMMEX PI Glove-in-Glove System epitomizes this, making a best practice even better. Visit ansell.com/os2gig or contact Customer Service at 855-868-5540 for samples and more information. 1.
