I once consulted on a cardiac surgery unit where surgeons were hav-
ing problems with
sharps injuries. After
watching several
cases, I noticed the
surgeons wore ultra-
lightweight gloves to
perform coronary ves-
sel anastomosis. That
made sense, but they
used a power saw to
crack the sternum and
guided the cutting
with one hand, which
was protected by only
a thin glove. I recom-
mended that the sur-
geons don orthopedic
gloves over the light-
weight gloves for the
initial step of the pro-
cedure and remove
the outer layer of pro-
tection once they
began the delicate
work inside the chest
