A true trailblazer, Mr. Williams ran the nation's first freestanding
ambulatory surgery center, founded the Accreditation Association of
Ambulatory Health Care and was the executive director of the
nation's first ambulatory surgical association. Most of all, he champi-
oned the same-day surgery concept. In 1970, Mr. Williams was the
executive director of the Surgery Center of Phoenix (Ariz.), a 7-OR
facility that was the first of its type in the country.
