"But if they don't take the extra steps to protect themselves, something very well could happen." There might also be a disconnect between what surgical profes- sionals believe and what they practice. For example, 80% of respondents agree that surgical smoke poses a serious threat to the OR staff, but time and again respondents reported that nothing is done about it at their facilities, either because the surgical team doesn't grasp or ignores the threat of surgical plume, or because some evacua- tion devices are too bothersome or too expensive.
