A typical quarterly bonus check is a week's worth of pay. When we're doing really well, it can amount to 2 weeks' pay. All full-time and per diem employees are eligible after completing their 90-day probationary periods. Currently, 44 employees participate in the quarterly bonuses. The size of a full-time employee's bonus is tied to her salary and performance evaluation; a per diem's bonus is tied to the number of hours she works. We hand-deliver checks to the staff members along with their bonus evaluations. Rather than direct deposit, we want employees to go to the bank and deposit or cash the check directly. There is some psychological benefit to going to the bank to cash or deposit a bonus check. We stress that the bonus is neither guaranteed nor promised. It's a gift from our generous owners. Yes, generous. They also provide a dollar-for-dollar 401(k) match, up to 10% of an employee's pay. When we bring on new hires, we highlight the bonus program and the 401(k) matching. They're both great incentives to retain and incentivize our talented staff.
