Taste in music is very personal and wide ranging. I hate it when a surgeon forces the OR staff to listen to hours of grunge or rap because he can control the music. The volume is critical and some younger surgeons feel they can blast their music to block out everything. If I can't hear them speak when I'm right beside them, then the volume must go down. God forbid you need to ask them a question about the case. Paul Feight, RN, CNOR UPMC Shadyside Hospital Pittsburgh, Pa. feightp@upmc.edu ◗ I enjoy listening to music in the OR. It can be a pleasant distraction for patients as well. I have often asked patients what music they like and have played requests during induction or spinal anesthesia. What is most important is the ability to communicate with the OR team. 2 F F Music that is too loud can be a safety hazard. Circulators, do not let your surgeon play music too loud.
