"If you want to leave the catheter in for a week — like we do for
our shoulders that are getting aggressive physical therapy —
instead of paying twice as much for a larger elastomeric pump, you
can pay the same amount for an electronic pump and simply fill a
bigger bag," says Dr. Winchester. "You may even want a pump to
last 10 to 14 days for a patient with complex regional pain syn-
drome. For that, you'd have to use 2 elastomeric pumps, even if you
used the larger size. But with an electronic pump, you'd be able to
do it with very little additional cost — just the cost of the additional
anesthetic."
