producing cases. She also points out that deciding which upgrades to
invest in demands looking at more than the bottom line.
"You must prioritize investing in solutions that will improve staff
and patient safety or eliminate an infection control risk," says Ms.
Williams. "There's more to developing a budget than money. All
aspects of a purchase must be considered."
A constant juggling act
Ms. Williams is in charge of the central sterile department and the pre-
op and PACU. She's also the facility's risk manager and infection pre-
ventionist, and serves as a circulating nurse when the regulars call
out. "I'm paid well, but I often work 10 hours a day — and sometimes
more than that," she says.
