ooking for an inexpensive way to cover for surgical techs dur-
ing their summer vacations? Do what we did: hire nursing stu-
dents from local RN programs. This past summer, we added 2
nursing students to our staff on a part-time basis, and we couldn't be
happier with the results. They help our RNs admit patients and in
PACU. In admission, they welcome patients, walk them through the
steps of reception and take vitals. They even perform pregnancy tests
when needed. In PACU, the students apply rhythm strips for scanning,
take temperatures, check consent forms, offer refreshment and, under
an RN's guidance, disconnect oxygen. In both areas, they keep inven-
