After surgery
Provide recovery room nurs-
es with detailed descriptions
of the positions patients
were placed in during surgery. If possible, patients should be positioned differ-
ently as they recover to relieve the pressure on sensitive areas.
Educate your recovery room nurses about the basics of patient positioning, so
they have a functional understanding of the steps your surgical team must take
to protect patients from pressure injuries and nerve damage (see "Patient
Positioning Pointers"). PACU nurses who understand where pressure points
are located in relation to specific surgical positions are more aware of how posi-
tioning impacts a patient's skin integrity, and know where to look for potential
trouble spots and injuries that need to be reported back to the surgical team.
