• MRSA nasal swabs. About an hour before
surgery, povidone-'iodine nasal swabs are
applied to patients who meet certain criteria —
any implant case (spine, joint, open heart), neu-
rosurgery cases and patients who've developed
resistance to antibiotics used to treat MRSA.
Staff apply 2 swabs in each nare for 30 seconds
each.
• Skin prep audit. A skin prep vendor rep
spent 4 days at the hospital observing staff
applying the prep and then gave feedback. Were
they applying the product properly? Allowing
enough time to dry? The vendor rep also admin-
istered yearly service-specific prep competen-
cies for all RNs.
