Karen Gabbert, RN,
BSN, clinical director of
the Surgery Center of
Kansas in Wichita, Kan.,
is a fan of refurbished
OR beds. "If you have a

bed for quite a bit less
with a year warranty on
it and do just as well as
if you'd purchased a
new bed," she says.
She's purchased 3 refurbished beds in the last 6 years for her
single-specialty orthopedics ASC — all the same brand. The last
one was $8,500. "I didn't even price a new bed. I knew it was well
out of my budget," she says.
Ms. Gabbert makes it a point to give her biomed department the
product manual on a CD. — Dan O'Connor
