Worth a thousand words
The images that splash across OR monitors are what Lakeland Health's sur-
geons see, but routing those images to a cloud-based server is what they notice.
"They wanted to store images on a secure server, log in and download the
images in their office for use in charting and to show patients during follow-up
appointments," says Mr. Keller.
That's easier said than done. Mr. Keller says capturing, sending and storing digi-
tal data often requires more than plug-and-play capabilities. He suggests you ask
for specifics about how imaging technology interfaces with electronic medical
records and cloud-based software, and involve an IT expert in the discussions.
"It's not always straightforward to manage surgical video and images, espe-
cially when you're dealing with robotic imaging," says Mr. Keller, who notes
the flexibility and storage capacity of cloud-based servers might be worth the
added expense. "The companies that are better at software solutions and offer
it at a reasonable price will thrive," he adds. "The companies that don't, likely
won't be around much longer."
Ms. Orth-Nebitt says her hospital's new imaging technology integrates with the
hospital's PACS system, which lets surgeons view pictures captured during surgery
