• Going paperless. Going paperless meant we didn't
have to earmark valuable real estate in the new facility
for a medical records department. And what better time
to go paperless than when opening a new center, when
you can plan out the IT needs of every area? There are
many considerations: Where will you put the drop lines?
What type of server will you use? What kind of comput-
er stations will best fit your needs? We installed station-
ary EMR stations in the pre-op rooms near the beds'
headboards to make it easier for staff to interact with
patients while inputting data. We also added mobile
wireless tablets that our anesthesiologists can use to
access patient data alongside nurses at bedsides or on
the move in any area of the facility. The combination of
stationary
stations and mobile wireless tablets has increased our
overall efficiencies. We also use the EMR system to
monitor patient outcomes and track the usage of dis-
posable supplies, which has let us drill down to the
exact cost of cases and make money-saving adjust-
ments on the fly.
