al sterile storage areas near the surgical
suites. This lets my team provide those items
in a more timely fashion. Additionally, ensur-
ing effective communication between sterile
processing and surgery is essential for suc-
cess. I personally meet with staff from each
specialty on a routine basis, and a task force
consisting of reprocessing techs and surgical
team members meets regularly to discuss
challenges that need solving and processes
that have proven successful.
Finally, remember to plan office space for
the staff members who order surgical sup-
plies and inventory instrumentation. For effi-
ciency's sake, it's ideal that they work adja-
cent to the sterile processing department.
Would you want to work there?
Our sterile processing department is flooded
with natural light, which, according to
research, improves workplace productivity
and morale. It's worth noting that local, state
and national regulations don't mandate that
you include staff-friendly features in your
facility's design, so it's important to take the
extra step to factor them into your plans.
While expansive view through a wall of win-
dows might not be possible in every sterile
processing department, there are other things
that can be done to improve the comfort level
