Fast room turnovers are also critically important to surgeons. "We
want to be as efficient as possible when we're in your facility," says
Dr. Gauta. His caseload fills 1 or 2 ORs for entire days, but lower-vol-
ume surgeons often covet early morning block times. "We all know
the first case of the day is most likely to start on time," he says.
"Delays are more common later in the afternoon because, let's be hon-
est, surgeons are more optimistic about how fast they can operate
than their skills and team allow."
Surgeons also want to work with a team that's focused on the job at
hand and always ready to help. Dr. Rickert notices if the surgical team
anticipates his next move and if the members are flexible enough to
get needed supplies and equipment ready on short notice. "That type
of service — a staff that always has rooms ready for surgery and is
