mindlessly putting their minimally soiled gowns and gloves into the
red bag kick buckets after a case.
Her project made it clear that education is the key to getting sur-
geons and staff to think about what they're discarding and how to seg-
regate trash into the proper receptacles. A mandatory online education
module for all perioperative staff drove home the point about what is
and isn't regulated waste and what items are allowed in the red bag
trash.
The education worked. A post-education audit showed the ORs
were producing 77% less regulated waste, says Ms. Perrego, happy to
be saving her hospital money, greening her ORs and no longer having
to trash-pick.
