Marking the Site Right — There's an App for That
A Florida ophthalmologist developed an app to eliminate the many communication slip-ups that can
occur between the time procedures are scheduled and surgeons begin to cut. It's called Site of
Surgery Assistant. The app automatically generates graphical and visual reminders of the correct sur-
gical site in wristband and sticker templates, which are printed on a conventional printer. Physicians
can also use an iPhone or iPad to take a picture of the patient for inclusion on the wristband.
Physicians' offices send the wristbands and stickers to surgical facilities along with patients' paper-
work. The app is available for free download at the Apple App store (osmag.net/2UXjCr).
