In a presentation on the subject of surface disinfection (osmag.net/DP5qhW), Ms.
Havill demonstrates that no detail of the process is too small to analyze, from
the agent to the application method. "Look for disinfectant products with a
broad spectrum of antimicrobial efficacy with the shortest possible contact
time," she says. "It has to be a good cleaner, compatible with surface materials
you're cleaning, non-corrosive and with a long shelf life. They must be safe to
personnel, patients and the environment in general."
Your options for getting the disinfectant to the surface include a cotton cloth,
a microfiber cloth or a pre-treated disposable wipe, a decision that comes down
to the cost of the products and your facility's laundering capabilities. "You might
think that disposable wipes would be more expensive," Ms. Havill explains, "but
recent literature shows that in the purchase of microfiber, which is reusable for
a period of time, 20% of the cost is resupplying wipes. … After repeated launder-
ing, they become shredded and not as effective."
