they weren't ready to adopt them in practice. "The surgeons gave a good
effort," says Ms. Thompson. They also gave valuable feedback on what
they didn't like.
One surgeon felt it was more dangerous to place sharps in a safety
bin because he had to take his eyes away from the field and worry
about where he was laying the sharp. Another said he felt like he need-
ed both hands to slip the cover over the safety needle. Same with the
safety scalpel: It took more effort than it should have to pull the activa-
tor back or to slide it forward. It would be nice, her docs told her, if the
scalpel blade retracted back into the handle after use with the simple
