Dr. White tried conventional single-
port surgery, but found its level of dif-
ficulty didn't justify the time and
effort it would have taken to master it,
especially when she had access to a
robot, which eliminates the physical
and mental strain of maneuvering
crisscrossed instruments in tight
spaces.
Vipul R. Patel, MD, medical director
of the Global Robotics Institute at
Florida Hospital in Orlando, has oper-
ated throughout the evolution from
open surgery to laparoscopic surgery
to robotic surgery. He's approaching
10,000 procedures after 12 years at the
helm of the da Vinci, so he's well posi-
tioned to grasp the current benefits
and future potential of robotic surgery.
He says robotic surgery requires small-
er incisions, results in much less blood
loss and leads to improved recoveries
for prostate cancer patients thanks to
less trauma to internal tissue and faster
returns of urinary continence and sex-
ual function.
The robot's 3D imaging lets Dr.
Patel operate faster, because he can
tell exactly how far instruments are
from the anatomy he's targeting.
