t can be a time-consuming
challenge to keep instru-
ment sets intact when they
go through the decontamination
step of reprocessing, so we
developed a simple numbering
system to help ensure instru-
ments remain with the case
carts they arrived on. Each case
cart in our hospital is num-
bered. When a cart enters the
decontamination area, a tech
attaches a stainless steel clip
with a number that matches the
case cart to each instrument
pan. When reassembling the
sets for sterilization, techs
match up the trays for a particu-
lar case cart before sterilization.
The system helps keep instru-
ment sets organized and
increases the efficiency of the
sterilization process.
