visor. "Now, 75% of my job is making sure reg-
ulatory things get done on a daily basis. I've
had to remove myself slowly from patient
care."
Compensation is only part of the value of
your working situation, as one New York ASC
administrator describes. "I left a long-term
position, 16 years in a leadership position at
an ASC, to return to hospital employment,
because the benefits were so much better,"
she says. "I recently returned to an ASC. The
hospital environment was not progressive or
conducive to change, efficiency and improve-
ments."
Some respondents have apparently discov-
ered this the hard way. "The right management
in place is critical," says one hospital manager.
"If you find yourself in a wrong-management-in-
place situation, get out as fast as you can: It will
only get much worse. Good or great manage-
ment is worth lower pay for the higher increase
in job satisfaction day to day."
Work and worth
Even if you're convinced that your salary isn't
on par with your position's responsibilities,
it's not always easy to know with any accura-
cy what your role is worth to your facility, in
comparison to others elsewhere. "It is difficult
in smaller, independent facilities to have a ref-
