supraglottic devices, as innovative tools that
are opening outpatient doors to more chal-
lenging patients. The devices, which are like
facemasks for the glottis, alleviate concerns
about laryngospasms and cause less insult to
airways. When placed and seated correctly,
they can also protect against regurgitation
from the esophagus.
"The LMA has been paramount and is con-
stantly being improved," says Perry
Ruspantine, CRNA, of Dartmouth, Mass.
"Patients who formerly would have been con-
sidered for endotracheal anesthesia can now
be administered a safe, effective anesthesia
with minimal airway stimulation and minimal
risks."
Lighted stylets, which cast a light that can
be seen in a darkened room as the intubation
device enters the trachea, were cited as
another innovation that can increase confi-
dence with difficult airways.
Practice, practice, practice
But new technology won't do anybody any
good — virtually all of our panelists agree —
unless you make sure you're intimately famil-
iar with how to use newer devices before
emergencies arise and you desperately need
them.
