The existing floor was of good quality, and likely had a long usable life ahead of it, but when it got wet, it became slippery. And during arthroscopy cases, it invariably got wet. We replaced those existing floors with a rubberized option. It's not as slippery when wet, and it also has anti-fatigue properties, which help pre- vent aching feet, knees and backs during long cases. We also place dis- posable absorbent mats around the sur- gical field to keep puddles at bay. There aren't a large number of flooring choices out there, but it's a product cate- gory you'll want to do some research on before you install it in your ORs. Visit other hospitals and seek input from the people who spend their days in the ORs.
