The rating and scoring and reviewing that healthcare transparency
brings isn't going away. More is on the way, says Dr. Kuznets, in part
through 2 government-initiated programs.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are currently devel-
oping an outpatient and ambulatory surgical component for their
Consumer Assessment of Health Providers and Systems patient experi-
ence of care survey. At the same time, the Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality is surveying the culture of safety at ASCs, hospital
outpatient departments and endoscopy centers. In combination with
quality measures reporting, these patient satisfaction and safety find-
ings could raise clinical practices to another level, says Dr. Kuznets.
"Care is patient-centered. If you're not paying attention to what patients
need, you're missing an opportunity for improvement." OSM
