With its deflectable tip, Olympus's 3D laparoscope provides a depth of vision that makes it much easier to iden- tify tissue planes. There are 2 independ- ent high-density image sensors at the distal end of the scope, which bends up to 100 degrees in 4 directions. You can also switch to 2D imaging when the situ- ation calls for it. Narrow-band imaging provides additional contrast, especially for superficial blood vessels and other structures. • Medivators Jet Prep. Recently approved by the FDA, the Jet Prep helps sal- vage colonoscopies you might otherwise have to cancel. Its tip produces a high- pressure 360-degree star-shaped spray pattern, as opposed to the stream spray delivered by standard pumps, to more thoroughly wash bowel prep material from the colon. • Pentax i-Scan. This digital, post-processing image-enhancement technology uses per- pixel modification to enhance views of the mucosal surface and blood vessels. It has 3 default set- tings, each of which you can access with the touch of a button: One sharpens the view of surface vessels and enhances the surface texture of the mucosa; the second also increases the contrast between the mucosa and blood vessels; and the third, in addition to providing the first 2 enhancements, increases the visibility of blood vessels, including dimly illuminated far-field regions. • FujiFilm Sonart. The unit promotes advanced image processing by transmitting ultrasound in wide beams instead of narrow ones to capture echo data in large zones. Image resolution is enhanced by adjusting for the optimal speed of ultrasound as it travels through the body. — Jim Burger FORWARD THINKING 4 Other Visionary Products OSE_1402_part2_Layout 1 2/6/14 2:58 PM Page 71
