After a failed attempt at electronic recordkeeping, the second time was the charm for
this surgery center.
Daniel Cook | Executive Editor
T
he staff at Memorial Spine and Neuroscience Center in South
Bend, Ind., used to hate electronic medical records. When the
facility opened 5 years ago, the physician-partners installed
records management software that they assumed would translate to
the surgery center setting. It
didn't. "We quickly realized it was the same program the local hospital
was using, cut down in an attempt to fit the ASC model," says Cheryl
Bloode, RN, the center's director. When the 5-year software contract
(sentence?) ended, she researched to find an EMR platform specifically designed for ambulatory surgery centers. They went live with it last
January. Finally, thankfully, Ms. Bloode and her staff have realized the
many benefits of electronic charting and billing.
