instruments with a dampened, lint-free cloth, and flush or immerse them in
sterile water in strict accordance with manufacturers' instructions for each
instrument.
• Keep sterile water baths used for cleaning or soaking soiled instruments in
areas removed from the operative field and removed from sites that maintain instruments needed to complete each surgical procedure.
• Pay attention to the manufacturers' instructions for reusable cannulated
instruments. Some specify the solution, volumes and frequency for flushing each lumen. Perform flushing in the OR or in the decontamination
area.
All policies and procedures also provide step-by-step guides to sterilization. We created a manual,
including manufacturers'
instructions, for easy reference; it's kept in the soiled
utility room. In addition, we
post instructions on the wall
of the soiled utility room for
easy reference during the
workday.
