Spinal and epidural anesthetics seem to be less thrombogenic than general anesthesia. "If you've got a healthy 45-year old getting inguinal hernia repair, does he really need DVT prophylaxis? Yes, he does," says Dr. Boyd. "Too often, we think we don't need to do anything for these patients. 'It's just outpatient hernia,' we'll say.
