4. Manage the fluid
Outside of the surgical site, there's a function of
arthroscopy that can have an impact on the safety
of your surgical employees. Because arthroscopic
visualization depends on continuous irrigation of
the joint space, it's inevitable that arthroscopy is a
wetter procedure than open surgery. The fluid
waste that can drip, splash and spill presents 2
potential hazards. If it makes contact with staff
members, it's a potentially infectious material exposure risk. If it ends up on the floor, it's a slip-andfall injury risk.
Efficient, effective fluid waste management is
possible with drapes designed to catch fluid, directto-drain suction equipment, and floor-based
absorbent or suction mats and devices. Over the
past decade or so, however, manufacturers have
been addressing the issue at the source.
