But many of these paper lions have little relevant work experi- ence and no mention of hobbies or interests that reflect balanced lives. They also expect big paychecks simply because of the nursing degrees they hold, but aren't willing to work hard, learn as much as they can, or motivate their team toward excellence in patient care, research and education. Having an RN after your name is great, but I'm refreshed when I see resumes that list practical skills and life experiences, and equally impressed when, during interviews, candidates share the motivations behind their real-world successes. I'd much rather hire nurses who volunteered during summer breaks to build houses than nurses who were members of Lambda Pi Alpha. And I'd prefer that undergraduate nursing core-curriculum include electrical engineering 101 instead of organic chemistry. I understand that only electricity's basics would be covered and not every nurse would be mechanical-minded, but when was the last time a nurse tapped into a semester's worth of organic chemistry when OR equipment went on the fritz? — Stacy Gober, RN, BSN D E C E M B E R 2012 | O U T PAT I E N T S U R G E R Y M A G A Z I N E O N L I N E 2 9
