services at lower rates. As a result, many are considering modifying
their practice structures, thus spurring merger and acquisition activity.
In our survey, 52.8% of the physicians responded that they were considering integrating their practices with another healthcare organization, including a single-specialty or multi-specialty practice, hospital
system or joint venture. The main drivers influencing these considerations were the need to reduce their expenses and to increase their
revenues. Given the uncertainty many physicians seem to feel about
ACOs and the longevity of out-of-network billing, consolidation seems
the most tenable choice by which physician-owners might accomplish
those goals.
Going forward
To adapt to the changing landscape of health care, your physicianowners may have to adopt new strategies, practices and expectations.
