one word: "Autonomy!" It means a great deal, she says. "They allow
me to run the clinical areas the way I think they should be run. They
trust my judgment and rarely question my decisions."
The road forward
Looking ahead, there is cautious optimism among survey respondents. But how long will it hold? Because it seems for many of them
that, on the whole, facilities are doing quite well for themselves (see
"A Nursing Vet Talks Recessions — and Keys for the Future"), but
that positive news doesn't appear to be trickling down.
One big lesson from this economic forecast is that if you want to be a
surgical administrator or manager, the love of the job will have to be
your guide, not the prospect of a big payout, says Ms. Waters.
"You really need to decide what your priorities are," she says. "And a
