More study assessing post-operative delirium is needed to determine the long-term effects, if any, of these phenomena. This is an emerging area of understanding, and definitions, reporting and tracking vary. The key is to take extra care to ensure your elderly patients and their caretakers are prepared for the possibility of the post-op period of delirium that can occur.
