Empower the safety champion to enact change at the front line by
performing daily observations of staff in action and reporting findings
to you before sharing them with the surgical team at regularly scheduled meetings. Our champion, for example, discovered inconsistencies in the proper use of fluid and blanket warmers, medication
administration and equipment readiness.
She also noticed that OR cleaning by the environmental services
department (ESD) was not standardized between cases, was not
being done according to acceptable standards and was damaging the
Velcro strips on surgical table mattresses. She observed that ESD
staffers hadn't received proper orientation and some members of the
department who had never cleaned an OR
were pulled from different areas of the hospital when staffing levels fell short.
To address the problems, the champion met
with leaders from the surgical and environmental departments to discuss possible solutions. Staffers will likely resist change and
think they're being scapegoated for what's
going wrong. The champion, with your support, must emphasize that concern over
patient safety is the motivation behind the
SIMPLE.
