Certified surgical technologist
Veronica Marella was alarmed
by the massive volume of blue
wrap being thrown out in her
hospital's ORs. Instead of
watching more of it pile up to
head to a landfill, she took
some home and sewed sleeping
mats out of the durable, water-
resistant, heat-absorbing mate-
rial. She's now given thousands
of them to the homeless, and
advises other clinicians and
facilities about how they can do
similarly green things. It's just
one of many tips we collected
as examples of how surgery
centers can reduce the carbon
footprints of their ORs.
