Sterilization packaging takes center stage in the age of accountability. Much has been written about the equipment, workflow and other challenges that routinely capture the attention of central sterile department managers. Less discussed, but equally important, is the subject of sterilization packaging. Issues during this critical stage of reprocessing can have a far-ranging impact on an institution's HAI rates, as well as its infection control and process improvement initiatives. As the volume and complexity of procedures continues to increase, it has been demonstrated that Getinge Pack sterilization pouches and rolls help improve inventory management and instrument availability compared with traditionally wrapped tray sets. The reduction in reprocessing costs is especially notable during instances when only a fraction of instruments in the set have been used during a surgical procedure. Furthermore, in the event of a surgical tray assembly error, individually wrapped instruments are easier to replace. Getinge Pack sterilization pouches and rolls constitute a pre-formed sterile barrier system (a term introduced by the International Organization for Standardization in 2006) that is tested to be in compliance with ISO 11607-1, ISO 11140-1 and EN 868-5. Once an instrument is placed into a sterile barrier system and subjected to sealing or a manual closure process by the CSD technician, a separate and distinct medical device has been created. The medical facility becomes legally responsible for validating the combined elements of the newly created medical device. It is critical that CSD managers provide an effective microbial barrier to significantly minimize the risk of recontamination. Getinge Pack sterilization pouches and rolls, in conjunction with the Getinge Pack Rotary Sealer, are proven to ensure the safety of terminally sterilized medical devices. This packaging solution offers an exceptional combination of protection, convenience and processing efficiency. With the shift to robotic surgery and minimally invasive surgery, there is an increase in the use of alternative low-temperature sterilization methods to protect heat- and moisture-sensitive devices and instruments. These methods utilize hydrogen peroxide as a sterilization agent. Getinge Pack VHP sterilization rolls and pouches incorporate high-grade Tyvek® material ideally suited for this process. A future edition of Managing Risk will explore how the Getinge Pack Rotary Sealer helps produce consistent heat-sealing results by reducing the need for human interventions. Tyvek is a registered trademark of DuPont. Utilize advanced OR3D software to simulate, plan and assess your space for long-term optimal use. Then step into a full-sized OR and see this design approach come to life with innovative technology and equipment that is guaranteed to improve your surgical workflow. Continue through the OR innovation Suite and learn about the latest integrated workflow solutions. You will see how the ability to access information and effectively communicate on demand in the OR and Central Sterile Department signifi- cantly contributes to improving patient care and outcomes.
