Spence Byrum Spence Byrum is the CEO of HRS Consulting, a human performance improvement company created to enhance decision-making in high-risk industries such healthcare. Mr. Byrum has reviewed more than 1 million near-miss and sentinel events, and is an expert in evaluation of the causal factors and remediation of their impacts. Mr. Byrum is a former Coast Guard rescue pilot and an internationally known expert on the subject of human performance in challenging, time-critical environments. Janelle Casanave, RN Janelle Casanave, RN, is a circulating nurse in outpatient surgery at Kaiser Permanente in San Jose, Calif., and a part of the Kaiser Permanente San Jose team that earned Gold status from the AORN Go Clear Program, a comprehensive surgical smoke-free recognition program for facilities that want to ensure a smoke-free environment. Ms. Casanave was a former cast member on MTV's "Real World" and "The Challenge." Callie S. Craig, MS, BSN, RN, CNOR Callie S. Craig, MS, BSN, RN, CNOR, is the system director of patient experience for Integris Health in Oklahoma City, Okla., where she oversees patient experience and education for a vast Oklahoma- based healthcare system that encompasses 9 hospitals and 100 provider clinics. Ms. Craig served on the national AORN Board of Directors as vice president and secretary. Wendy Dean, MD Wendy Dean, MD, is the co-founder of Moral Injury (moralinjury.healthcare) and the senior vice president of program operations for The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine in Bethesda, Md. An article Dr. Dean authored along with reconstructive plastic surgeon Simon Talbot, MD, in STAT titled "Physicians aren't 'burning out.' They're suffering from moral injury" garnered nearly 250,000 article downloads, millions of related video views on the subject and perfectly encapsulated the feelings of scores of healthcare providers. Dr. Dean worked for the U.S. Army in product development for regenerative medicine technologies from 2010-18 and is considered an expert in the field of hand and face transplants. Stacey L. Decker, MS, BSN, RN, CPAN Stacey L. Decker, MS, BSN, RN, CPAN, is the vice president and chief nursing officer for Integris Lakeside Women's Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla. Ms. Decker served as director and then administrative director at a 20-OR surgical department and a 5-OR ASC for 22 years. William Duffy, RN, MJ, CNOR, FAAN William Duffy, RN, MJ, CNOR, FAAN, is the director of Health Systems Management Master of Science program at Loyola University Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing in Chicago. In addition to his demanding job at Loyola, Mr. Duffy is a charismatic speaker who has spoken nationally and internationally on topics such as health law and nursing leadership. Mr. Duffy was the 2004-2005 National President of the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), where he led the association's initiative for National Time Out Day to eliminate wrong site surgery. He currently serves on the AORN Board of Directors. Thomas W. Durick, MD Thomas W. Durick, MD, of Envision Physician Services in Walnut Creek, Calif., has been the medical director and acting administrator of a busy surgery center in the San Francisco Bay area for the past 10 years. Dr. Durick has given multiple presentations over a wide range of topics including cost containment in the operating room, quality improvement, prevention of fires in the operating room, outpatient anesthesia specialization, prevention of complications in anesthesia and neuromuscular blockade. Ann Geier, MS, RN, CNOR, CASC Ann Geier, MS, RN, CNOR, CASC, is the chief nursing officer for Surgical Information Systems, an Alpharetta, Ga.-based company that provides software solutions and services for ambulatory surgery centers and hospitals. Ms. Geier, who serves on the Outpatient Surgery Magazine Editorial Board, is also an accreditation surveyor and past board member of the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association. Jay Horowitz, CRNA Jay Horowitz, CRNA, is the owner of Quality Anesthesia Care Corporation in Sarasota, Fla., and a longtime member of the Outpatient Surgery Magazine Editorial Board. Mr. Horowitz is an active member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and a champion of the value and skill that CRNAs bring to the OR. Zeev Kain, MD, MBA Zeev N. Kain, MD, MBA, is a Chancellor's Professor of anesthesiology, pediatrics, and psychiatry, and the chair of the department of anesthesiology and perioperative care at University of California Irvine (UCI) Health. He has had continuous NIH funding since 1996 and had published over 250 publications in the peer-reviewed literature. His main research focus was stress in children undergoing surgery and invasive procedures. Dr. Kain became very interested in the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH), and has subsequently been instrumental in implementing PSH at UCI Health. He established the annual summit on the PSH and is a member of the steering committee of the newly launched 43-hospital collaborative on this topic. His training in Lean Six Sigma, MBA, and management background have enabled him to embark on the quest to make the Perioperative Surgical Home ubiquitous at UCI Health and to help bring this care model to institutions nationally. Marty A. Makary, MD, MPH, FACS Dr. Marty Makary is the New York Times bestselling author of "Unaccountable," a new book on how teamwork and transparency can rescue American health care, designated a 2012 Library Journal Book of the Year. Dr. Makary has written for The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, is a medical commentator for CNN and Fox News, and speaks nationally on the future of health care in America. A pancreas surgeon at Johns Hopkins and an associate professor of health policy and management, Dr. Makary works closely with Dr. Pronovost on patient safety research and was the lead author of the original publications on OR checklists. He served on the WHO checklist committee and chaired the WHO workgroup on measuring surgical quality worldwide. Bob Marrs, CRCST, CIS, CHL Bob Marrs, CRCST, CIS, CHL, is the vice president of organizational development at Beyond Clean Consulting, an instrument care and sterile processing consulting company. For 20 years Mr. Marrs has worked in surgery as a certified surgical technologist, a central sterile technician, a case cart coordinator as well as a sterile processing supervisor, manager and director. Darci Nagorski Darci Nagorski is the administrator and CEO of the St. Cloud (Minn.) Surgical Center, an 11-room facility that performs about 10,000 multispecialty cases each year. Ms. Nagorski spent 16 years overseeing 4 outpatient imaging centers and 3 hospital radiology departments.
