Build relationships with your staff. As a manager new to an
established group, it takes time to build relationships. In my
new role, one of the surgical techs was very vocal and, frankly, I want-
ed to fire her for her negativity. My gut instinct (now it shows up!)
told me to wait and get to know her. Over time, we worked together
to improve the level of care and work environment. She became a
valuable asset — and friend — to me. Getting to know team members
better, on a professional and personal level, can lead to improved rela-
tionships and better patient care.
It's all about our patients
Caring for one another leads to safe care for our patients. Former NBA
coach Phil Jackson put it best: "The strength of the team is each indi-
vidual member. The strength of each member is the team."
