3. For dirty procedures, use a closing table.
One of the biggest changes we made was how we close cases that are
considered "dirty" procedures. In colorectal surgery, these cases tend
to be resections or repairs that involve the bowel or rectum. For gyne-
cology, this includes abdominal hysterectomy cases. For these specific
procedures, where the risk of contamination is higher, we have added
a closing table to the OR setup.
Here's how it works: The surgeon and surgical team go through the
procedure as usual. However, once the procedure is complete and the
wound is irrigated, the team removes all supplies and instruments
